Physician and artist Dr. Aditi Kantipuly believes that complex science can be made understandable — and even beautiful — through creative storytelling. While training in preventive medicine in Canada, she turned her attention to cerebral cavernous malformation (CCM) and found a unique way to educate and comfort families: she wrote a children’s book.
Her book, Biscochito, tells the story of a grandmother with CCM sharing her experiences with her grandson as they bake New Mexico’s official state cookie. Each cookie becomes a “gateway to knowledge,” gently explaining the challenges and legacy of the genetic condition.
Created in collaboration with CCM patients from New Mexico and supported by the Rare Disease Diversity Coalition and the Alliance to Cure Cavernous Malformation, Biscochito blends culture, compassion, and science. Today, the book is in schools across New Mexico, helping children and families learn about CCM with understanding and compassion.
